Bill föddes 1913 i en mindre gruvstad i Skottland vid namn Glenbuck i grevskapet Ayrshire. Uppväxtförhållandena var hårda och Shankly halkade snart in på den politiska banan som språkrör för gräsrötterna. Utan att tappa intresset för humanitära frågor valde dock Bill Shankly att överge politiken för att helt och fullt satsa på en karriär inom fotbollen. Bill spelade i högsta serien i Skottland för klubbarna North Press End och Carlisle United, han representerade även skotska landslaget 7 gånger.
Det är dock som manager han främst är i hågkommen.
När han kom till LFC 1959 var det en klubb i svag kris, vi höll till i dåvarande division två, arenan var sliten, träningsfaciliteterna riktigt dåliga och en organisation runt fotbollen som var på tok för klen. Men med bland annat Bob Paisleys hjälp byggde han upp klubben och tog tillbaka Liverpool FC till högsta serien och återtog titeln som stadens bästa lag. Under sina femton år i klubben tog Liverpool bland annat 3 liga titlar, 2 FA-cup segrar och 1 Uefa Cup titel. Det är få personer som gjort sådant avtryck i LFC:s historia som Bill Shankly. Hans passion för fotbollen och klubben var enorm. Bill var också en väldigt rättfram och ärlig person. Det i kombination med att han hade talets gåva gjorde att han inte bara tog LFC tillbaka till finrummet i fotbollen igen utan att han också byggde upp ett otroligt stort intresse för klubben. Många citat från Bill lever fortfarande kvar än i dag. Flera av dem är klassiska. Här är några av hans mest berömda citat:
"For a player to be good enough to play for Liverpool, he must be prepared to run through a brick wall for me then come out fighting on the other side"

På en av Liverpools Europacup resor, skrev han Fotboll som yrke och Anfield som adress när han skulle checka in på hotellet.
"Sir, said the receptionist, you need to fill in where you live.
"Lady", he replied, "in Liverpool there is only one adress that matters and that is where I live."

Shankly turned to Bob Paisley and said: Christ Bob, we´ve signed the wrong player."
